Here’s a short story to explain the multiplication of positive and negative
integers:
“The Adventure of Tom and the Treasure Hunt”
Tom is going on a treasure hunt in a forest, and he has to follow a few rules for
his journey. He carries two kinds of maps:
➢ Positive Maps: These maps lead him in the right direction to find
treasure.
➢ Negative Maps: These maps send him backwards away from the
treasure
1)Multiplication of Both Positive Integers:
- Tom gets a map with both directions marked as positive.
- This means that he’s moving in the right direction getting closure to treasure.
Example: - Tom has a map showing 5 steps forward and then he moves 3
steps forward again.
So, 5* 3= 15
Result: - Tom reaches 15 steps ahead. He is closure to the treasure!
2)Multiplication of Positive and Negative Integers:
- Now, Tom finds a map with one direction marked positive and other
negative. - This means he moves in the right direction for some steps, but then
has to turn around and move backwards. - This might seem confusing, but tom realizes that if he moves forward
and then backward, he’s still going away from the treasure.
Example: - Tom has a map showing 5 steps forward, but then 3 steps
backward.
So, 5* (-3) = -15
Result: - Tom ends up with 15 steps behind where he started. He if farther
form the treasure!
3)Multiplication of Both Negative Integers:
- Next, Tom finds a map with both directions marked as negative.
- This means he has to go in the wrong direction, away from the
treasure and then after going backwards, he must turn around and
go forward again. - It’s like a double negative- Tom actually ends up moving forward
towards the treasure.
Example: - Tom has a map showing 5 steps backwards, but then he
turns around and moves 3 steps backward again.
This makes him move forward instead of backward.
So, (-5) * (-3) = 15
Result: - Tom ends up 15 steps forward, closure to the treasure!
Because two negative directions cancel each other out, putting him
back on the path towards success.
➢ Through this treasure hunt, Tom learns that multiplication
with both positive and negative integers helps him
understand the twists and turns of his journey.
➢ But the rules of multiplication always guides him back on the
right track!
➢ Finally, Tom understand Multiplication is Magical!
