Here’s a short story to explain the properties of division of integers:
“The Village Market”
In a small village, a market has 12 apples. The market keeper, Mr. Positive and
his assistant, Ms. Negative work together to divide the apples fairly.
1)Division by Same Sign:
❖ Mr. Positive wants to divide the 12 apples among 4 happy customers
equally.
❖ Each customer gets +3 apples.
❖ Later, Ms. Negative divides the apples among 4 unhappy customers. Even
though she’s upset, she ensures fairness, so each customer still gets +3
apples.
Property: When dividing two integers with the same sign (both positive
or both negative) , the result is positive.
Example: (12) / (4) = 3 and (-12) / (-4) = 3
2)Division by Different Sign:
❖ One day, Mr. Positive has 12 apples, but Ms. Negative is responsible for
dividing them.
❖ She’s grumpy and gives each customer -3 apples.
❖ Another day, Ms. Negative has -12 apples, but Mr. Positive helps
distribute them.
❖ Each customer still receives -3 apples.
Property: When dividing two integers with different signs (one positive ,
one negative) ,the result is negative.
Example: (12) / (-4) = -3 and (-12) / (4) = -3
3)Division by zero:
❖ The customers ask, “What if we divide the apples into 0 groups?” Mr.
Positive laughs and says, “You can’t do that! No groups means no
division – it’s undefined!”
Property: Division by 0 is undefined. You cannot divide any number by
zero.
Example: 8 / 0 = not possible
Lets Explore: (-15) / (3) or (20) / (-5)
